Grown Ups Film Pitch

‘Explore the ways in
which two micro elements of film language create meanings and responses in one
sentence from your chosen film.’
The sequence I have chosen is from my favourite film, Grown Ups; it is meant to be tension and comedy, is a comedy about five friends and former teammates who reunite years later to honor the passing of their childhood basketball coach. They all come with their families for a weekend reunion. This is when all the characters meet, as this is happening there is diegetic sounds for example cars and other people talking also the sounds of the nature as they all meet at the church where their old coach is. The sounds give an relaxing effect because it makes the audience feel like they are in nature, this helps to create a peaceful atmosphere. At the church there is a ceremony and all of the friends talk about the coach and also one of them sings a song but ends up getiing laughed at is he sounds stupid. One of the families has to go to Milan for a fashion show because Roxanne is the designer and her clothes are being presented to famous critics. The director builds tension with the film language; the sequence shows the build-up to the point when the family has to leave.
The sequence starts with a high angle crane shot looking at the restaurant at the table where the families sit together to eat, there are diegetic sounds to give an atmosphere of a small but loud restaurant this is created by having everybody inside talking and there is also sounds from the kitchen where the food is being prepared. This angle is used because it shows the setting and how the main characters are positioned at the middle of the setting to show who is more important and who the audience has to concentrate on. The sequence continues with a close up of Roxanne as the families start to take the fact that they have to leave as a joke but then there is a close up shot of Lenny who is Roxanne’s husband. He tells the other families that he is not joking about leaving them and he also admits how the family had to miss their daughters production for a fashion show as he talks Roxanne walks out of the scene in agony and the shot changes to a high angle to give affect by showing how Roxanne marches out of the restaurant. At that same time their daughter says ‘i want to get wasted’ as she thinks that it means that you get wasted on chocolate. Everybody at the table turns silent as Lennie follows his wife outside.
The sequence continues with Roxanne & Lenny in their bedroom talking about what happened at the restaurant, as the couple talks about the trip the medium shot that the sequence continues with turn into a close up shot to give effect when they are talking about leaving to go to Milan. As the camera concentrates on the couples faces there is non diegetic sounds that give a serious effect to show how serious Roxanne is about this. The music is intense to prove that there is no way to joke about this also this makes the audience put themselves in Lenny's place and imagine what he feels at this moment. Roxanne shouts how she isn’t a ‘selfish working dragon lady’ as Lenny tries to calm her down. This is when the music stops. There are non-diegetic sounds as they continue to discuss. The sounds stop straight away to make Roxanne have a bigger effect on the audience.
The following morning everybody is starting to have breakfast until they realise that all of the food is organically made and not cooked very well, that is when Lenny starts to laugh at his friend Rob who make ‘Banana pancakes’. There is diegetic sounds of the food being fried this gives an effect of a family breakfast as they are all together cracking jokes and talking about what would happen through out the day. When Lenny talks to his friend about it he starts slapping his face with the natural ‘banana’ this makes the scene funny as everybody else in the movie starts to get amused at this happening but Rob’s wife gives Lenny bacon which he is not allowed to cook inside because it is a dead animal.
In the following sequence Roxanne walks out of the house as the scene starts with a long shot and it slowly moves to a medium shot of the family’s maid who is putting all the baggage’s in the car for the family to get ready to go to Milan at this moment Roxanne realises that her two children are playing at the lake and she gets upset as the camera concentrates on her face to show her emotions. At this point there is non diegetic sounds that give an atmosphere, this is when the audience feels apathy because of the sound effects being a slow song that represents tragedy in the way that the music goes.
